Completing Your Odesk Profile

After signing up on oDesk, the next task should be completing your oDesk Profile. Filling up information about yourself and your working experiences may sound easy but let me warn you that it’s not as easy as it sounds or seems.

Your oDesk Profile is your key to success. If there’s one thing that buyers would look at, that is the Providers’ profile. This is where they learn your past working experiences. This is where they judge you.

Most buyers rely on your profile if they’re going to hire you or just pick a more qualified applicant, so you’d better make sure that what’s written on your profile is the most accurate and honest information about yourself.

Let me walk you through the process of creating and completing your oDesk Profile - The way buyers would easily notice you.

Title: Your title should be catchy, impressive and realistic. This is the first thing that buyers would lay their eyes on. Describe briefly what your strengths are or how companies / buyers would benefit from you. Also, by putting your expertise or skills on your Title would increase the chances of buyers finding your profile. For instance, when buyers search for SEO specialist, and you have that keyword on your title, your profile is most likely to pop up on the search results.

Good examples of Titles:

  • Social Media Marketing Expert, SEO Specialist, Web Developer & Writer!
  • #1: English Test(Sentence/Spelling) Highly Creative Blogger /Article Writer
  • PHP/MySQL/DHTML/Ajax Developer/Project Manager

Portrait: Your profile photo should look professional and reliable. This may equal your credibility as a provider.

Public Profile / Objective: On this part, you will be able to choose if your profile will be shown in public or privately. If you’re looking for work then your profile should be in public view. I also advise you to show your full name so that when people refer you to other buyers and they search for your name, they will be able to easily find you.

Public Profile

In this section, you can edit your title, hours of availability, years of working experience and rate yourself in English fluency. You should also write compelling objectives that will briefly describe yourself, what you do and how you can be an asset to the buyers.

  • oDesk is indeed a treasure chest of competitive providers and buyers. But these people are diamonds in the rough. One has to search thoroughly for them :)

  • Well, yeah I agree. That’s where Good feedback comes in.

    Hi Micah,

I saw your provider profile on oDesk and was amazed at what you have accomplished! Your profile is what I would like to have in maybe a year or so. You must really be very good at what you do for a lot of people to be very satisfied with your work and to charge that rate.

Right now I’m less than a month old in oDesk and haven’t found a buyer who can give me work that I would really love to do like Admin duties and Writing. It’s so hard competing with all those other providers with years of experience. It’s harder that I’m too young to be considered an administrative assistant. I actually got an interview and the interviewer said I wouldn’t be a good fit for his company because I don’t have enough experience. But then again, how am I supposed to get some if nobody hires me hahaha.

Anyway, I guess I’ll have to be patient and determined to get a job. Find a way to sell my skills without selling out. Your experience is an inspiration to people like me. Wish you the best and hope to hear more tips from you soon.

    Best,
    Micaela Erin Jularbal

Wow ate. This is great. I think I’m also going to give my profile a once-over now after reading this. You made good and helpful points here. Congratulations for being featured by Buzzworthy. More power.

  • You are such an inspiration Micah!I have joined odesk last september and opted to go fulltime last november. I even closed my computer shop for this job and I’d say I made the right decision. I am earning more with less overhead expenses and more quality time for my family. Got a lot of things to learn in SEO and I am so inspired to further study with all your on going projects and nice feedbacks.

Kudos to you!By the way, where in Manila are you?Do you also join GT. I have been joing EB’s of odeskers here in Manila and I hope to see you soon too!Godbless!

    • Hello there Belle,

Thank you for the compliment. :) I’m glad that everything went well with you & working full time on odesk. By the way, what’s GT? you guys have EB’s? wow that’s so cool… Can you tell me more about it? and what’s your name on odesk so I can see you. hope to see you here more often…

      • Rex

I am also curious about what “GT” means. You’re having EB’s in Manila? Why haven’t you guys inform me?! I’m from the philippines, too. I choose to stay here in Cebu but from time to time I visit my family in Manila. Hope to hear from you, guys!

Search google for “Rex Villaflor” and you’ll see my odesk profile. Ciao!

        • Hey Rex, I really don’t have an idea what GT means. But let me contact Bhelle and ask her about GT and the EB’s. I would really love to meet all of you. So, you do affiliate marketing?

  • Rex

Yes, I am and is paying me well :) At first I thought of it as a big risk because I have to spent couple of hundred dollars to launch campaigns. I actually lose big time on my first month, I exhausted almost all of my earnings from my freelancing gig! But I didn’t give up and study the craft, found a mentor and I am now earning double (or 3x) of what I used to earn from freelance jobs (odesk and other clients)

it’s kinda sort of a passive income stream so I still have the time to accept offers from clients and doing SEO services. it’s fun, really!

I’d love to meet you guys so we could share our stuff and ideas. I have a few days in Manila this coming June and a couple of weeks this mid-August to September. Hope to see you, soon!

    • Hey Rex, GT means Girl Talk… haha, wanna join? I guess it’s for oDesk freelancers too. Bhelle said that they are planning to make one oDesk videos and she’s asking if we wanna join… I will, how about u? About the Affiliate marketing, can you give me some tips about it? Medyo lost kc ako dyan e… :)

you are indeed an inspiration. I would like to learn SEO tooo… how did you manage that despite yer stressful nursing duties? Congratulations!!!! well done!!!

    • Hey, sorry I wasn’t able to get a copy of my interview. I did not pushed through getting it since there are some other Filipino freelancers that weren’t so happy about me going public. Anyway, I’ll try and retrieve one. :)P Thanks anyway. Learning and practicing SEO while studying nursing was tough but I managed to be successful coz I really LOVE what I do.
