How Popular Drinks Contribute to Weight Gain

I know you are familiar with a juice drink fortified with L-Carnitine that is said to help burn fats.  But did you know that most of the popular drinks nowadays could otherwise make you become fat?

starbucks2Let’s begin with those found in your favorite hang-out, specialty coffee houses.  They offer a variety of drinks including sandwiches and pastries on the side.  A 16 ounce cup of chocolate brownie frappucino contains 400 calories equivalent to eating 2 small slices of chocolate cake.  What if you have ordered 2 pieces of brownies that is equivalent to 100 calories each.  So your calorie intake while chatting with your friends is around 600 calories.

If you’re not fond of drinking frappucino perhaps you prefer smoothies.  A smoothie is like the old-fashioned milk shake with a modern twist.  Fruit-based smoothies contain anti-oxidants from fruits and calcium from yogurt or milk which makes it healthier to drink.  A regular fruit-based smoothie contains about 180 calories only but if you have added some high calorie ingredients like honey, chocolate, cream, peanut butter, coconut cream and other sweeteners, you would be increasing the calorie count from 400 to 950, equivalent to eating a quarter pounder burger with French fries.

pearl-shakeNext, we go to your favorite pizza house.  What drink do you usually order with your pizza? Is it pearl shake, iced tea or fruit juice?  A 12 once cup of pearl shake has 280 calories while an 8 ounce glass of sweetened/flavored commercial iced tea mix has 90 calories.  A real 100% fruit juice has 180 calories but you get the essential vitamins and minerals.  However, if you were served with an artificial/commercial fruit juice, you could consume more calories because of the sugar and fruit flavoring.

After work, we can go to a party where we might drink soft drinks or alcoholic drinks.  A 12 ounce cola contains 160 calories while alcohols like gin, brandy, whisky, tequila and vodka contain about 115 to 125 calories per shot or jigger while a 12 ounce glass of beer has about 150 calories, plus the fatty foods in the buffet table, you do the math.

Water is still the healthiest drink of all time with zero calories.  But those drinks are good if you’re trying to gain weight because it contains liquid calories that can give you some pounds if unburned.  But if you’re a health buff who knows how to burn extra calories, taking those drinks won’t have any effect at all.  Let’s cheer to that!
