Lessons to Learn from Typhoon Ondoy

ondoy1A lot of our fellow Filipinos, as well as some of our neighboring country, are suffering from the effects and remains of typhoon Ondoy.  Their houses were submerged to water, their properties damaged, some stolen, their livestock and loved ones drown by the flood.  The saddest part I could say is that many people have died trying to save other people.

Filipinos are said to be very resilient from this kind of things - hardships, disasters and tragedies.  But I think we should not only be strong but we should also learn from the things that have sometime brought us down.  And what could we learn from this disastrous typhoon Ondoy?

That a small amount of discipline could do big things to save the environment. The big contributors to the flood are wastes and garbage.  We may oftentimes observe this, many of cigarette smokers just throw their cigarette butts anywhere they stand. While most people after eating junk foods and candies just leave their foils and wrappers anywhere they please when they can put it in their bags for a while and throw it in the nearest trash bin after.  If only we could learn to dispose our garbage properly maybe we won’t be seeing them floating back to us again.

That a little concern for the world we live in could prevent some big disasters. There were laws against smoke belchers and regulations on proper factory waste management but were just not fully implemented.  If we could only do something to minimize global warming, humongous flood could have been prevented.

That political TV ad disappears in times of crisis. Haven’t you become irritated seeing frequent political ads in almost all TV channels for the past few months?  How come I have not seen too much lately? As far as I knew, after Senator Miriam Santiago called all the government official’s attention during her privilege speech regarding their expensive infomercials, some have still didn’t pulled their ads, I even saw a newer version.  Now, I can only see a few.

I think politicians could be more popular if they will use their millions of pesos to charitable works or causes rather than spending it in print and TV publication.

That there’s a hero in all of us. Isn’t it so fascinating to see that we Filipinos help each other out especially in depressing situations like this?  People from all walks of life, strangers to each other, worked hand in hand to help the typhoon victims.

If only people could do these things even without a threat of a typhoon. Helping each other even in the smallest way, we could uplift each other up and there would be nowhere else to go for the Filipinos and for our country but upwards.
