Writing a Good Cover Letter in Applying for Jobs on oDesk

An oDesk newbie named Joefel Sodusta commented on my post Completing your oDesk Profile 2 asking for tips in creating a good cover letter. I always want to help other people and share my blessings so if ever I have the time, I make sure to provide response to my readers and friends. So this post is for you, Joefel. :)

Writing a Good Cover Letter

When applying to jobs, it is necessary to submit a great cover letter to impress your potential clients or buyers. But for newbies, the question would be ” What should I include in my cover letter “? So here are some things to consider when writing your cover letter.

pen-and-paper

  • Every cover letter should be unique.
  • Write every cover letter individually, targeting the specific needs of that particular job.
  • Don’t include your contact information in your cover letter (your email address, chat ID, etc.). This is a violation of oDesk policy and makes you an easy target for an unscrupulous buyer.
  • Use a warm greeting like Greetings!, Hello there, - something that sounds friendly and jolly.
  • Start with a short introduction of yourself and your past working experiences.
  • Better yet, do link directly to some relevant examples of your work.
  • State what you can do to help the buyer with their project.
  • Use a semi formal tone that will give you a professional yet friendly impression.
  • Proof read it. Make sure there are no spelling mistakes or grammar errors.
  • Do state your availability (when and how much you can work) and explain what kind of commitments you have to any other oDesk assignments, regular employers, etc. Be sure to invite them to ask questions of you. Any buyer worth working for will have questions for you.

I hope this list will help you, Joefel and other new oDesk providers in applying to job openings. :) Subscribe to my RSS for more Work from Home tips and SEO tidbits.
